Hip Tip – Mini Pumpkin Centerpiece October 21, 2009

baby_boo

Creating a centerpiece for a fall dinner is as easy as picking up a bag of mini pumpkins at the grocery store or farmer’s market. These adorable miniature pumpkins – the most common are Jack-Be-Little or Baby Boo – are inexpensive and hearty enough to last for weeks. Place the pumpkins on a simple cake stand or platter and pile them high. Tuck fresh leaves or cut branches of fall berries in empty spaces for a finished look. For a more modern version, use a white rectangular platter and place an odd number of pumpkins in a straight line, alternating with tea lights.

Baby Shower Idea – Decorate Onesies October 10, 2009

Give parents-to-be a memorable gift to take home from a baby shower by having each guest decorate a onesie.  Supplies for this project are inexpensive and easy to find:  White onesies in various sizes, a few pieces of cardboard (to put inside the onesie so the paint doesn’t bleed through), a package of stencils (animals, flowers, etc.), fabric paints in a few colors, a small plastic tray for the paint and a package of paint brushes.  Cover a table in newspaper and an inexpensive table cloth.  Buy a package of small clothespins and use a piece of ribbon, yarn or string to make a clothesline across the room (the paint will need time to dry).  If you have the space, have guests go into another room to do the decorating and bring the mom-to-be into the room after everyone has made one to present her with the gift.  Every new parent will appreciate having a plethora of cute onesies for their new bundle.

Celebrity Baby Shower Game August 31, 2009

IMG_5300

Baby shower games are often boring, annoying or downright gross (guessing what candy bar was mushed up in a diaper – no thanks!).  The celebrity baby name matching game is an exception and perfect for a pop-culture-loving crowd.  Picked the most up-to-date list of celebrity babies to make the game more challenging.  List celebrity parents in one column and the names of their babies in another column, scrambling the order of each so the names of the parents and babies are not on the same line.  Make a key for yourself to make ”grading” easier.  Be sure to provide pens or pencils for the players.  Give a fun shower prize for the winner, such a gift card to a movie theater or Fendengo, a DVD or CD featuring one of the celebrity parents or an itunes gift card.

Did you know there’s a blog dedicated exclusively to tracking celebrity baby naming news?  It’s a great resource for making this fun baby shower game.  Check it out:  www.celebritybabynamesblog.com.

Seashell Place Card Holders August 26, 2009

seashell_placecard_holders

I’ve found that most shell place card holders look cheap or kitchy, until I saw these Neptune Shell Place Card Holders from Two’s Company.  They’re perfect for a beach theme party, whether it be a rehearsal dinner, dinner party or beachy bridal luncheon.  Even if you don’t use formal place cards, these can be used for marking food on a buffet table (i.e. writing the name of the dish on a place card so guests know what each dish is without having to ask).  They can also be used to display pictures on a guest table at the party, or at home after the party is over.

Modern Baby Shower Banner August 24, 2009

IMG_5257

Forget the “It’s a Boy/ Girl” banners and make your own modern personalized banner for your next baby shower.  It’s a fairly simple project that can be done in advance, and makes a nice keepsake for the parents-to-be.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Scrapbooking paper in various patterns
Precut card stock (available in the invitations section in a craft store)
Stencils (purchased or made from a site like http://www.alphabet-soup.net/ttools/stencil.html)
Scissors
Glue, double sided tape or scrapbooking dots
Hole punch
String, ribbon or rafia

Before you start cutting, plan which letters will be cut from which pieces of scrapbooking paper, alternating patterns so each letter has a different pattern next to it.  Trace stencil letters onto the back of scrapbooking paper and cut them out using sharp scissors.  If you are writing more than one word you may want to use the scraps of paper to make a circle or star to put between the two words (as shown above).

Paste each letter onto a piece of precut card stock, leaving enough room at the top to punch a hole without punching through the letters.  Punch two holes at the top of each piece of card stock.  A trick for making evenly spaced holes: Measure the first one you do, then put the next piece of card stock under the first and mark the holes with a pencil so you know where to punch the holes, repeating with each pieces of card stock.

Thread a ribbon through the back of the first hole and the front of the second hole.  Hang the banner using pushpins/ thin nails, or by tying each end to a sturdy object on a bookshelf.

Hip Tip – Dress Your Table in Seersucker August 12, 2009

Seersucker_Napkins

Give your table a beachy look with seersucker.  This preppy fabric invokes the feeling of being beachside in New England.  Use this look for a lobster bake, pool party, backyard BBQ or summer dinner party.  Play up the theme with starfish, shells, anchors, buoys or hurricanes filled with sand and pillar candles.  Now your table will be dressed to impress.

Hip Tip – Summer is the Season for Prosecco July 21, 2009

Prosecco, a sparkling Italian wine, is one of my favorite summer drinks.  It’s light, refreshing and cheerful.  Prosecco is often served at brunch with a peach puree to make a Bilini.  Don’t save it for your Sunday brunch; it’s a great drink for any time of day.  Prosecco has a relatively low alcohol content, making it suitable for sweltering summer nights.

Prosecco pairs well with light appetizers like proscuitto wrapped melon, fig and parmesan crostini, bruscetta, olives, grilled vegetables, aged cheese and fresh fruit.

Prosecco is also touted as an inexpensive alterantive to champagne.  One of my favorites rings up at $15 a bottle from a local wine shop here in NYC.

If you haven’t sipped Prosecco yet this summer, now is the time.  Salute!

Finally…Fancy Paperless (Email) Invitations July 17, 2009

paperless_post_FINAL

We’ve cancelled our subscriptions to catalogues, bring our own bags to the store and have kicked our bottled water habit.  But giving up paper invites sent via snail mail is something many of us haven’t been willing to give up, especially for special occasion events.  An Evite (www.evite.com) isn’t appropriate for every occasion, and you don’t want your guests to feel pressure to come up with a witty response in order to RSVP.  There hasn’t been a good alternative to traditional paper invitations…until now!  I was oh-so-excited to discover Paperless Post (www.paperlesspost.com) in a recent article in the NY Times.  Paperless Post offers a great alternative to paper invitations that can even be used for formal events.

Paperless Post offers many amazing design options - formal and casual styles; traditional, classic or modern motifs; and their paper selection is incredible (including letterpress-look designs).  You must create an account to view the invitation options, but it’s a simple process and there’s no cost.  Be sure to sign in through the link below, which gives NY Times readers 25 free stamps (that’s how you send the invites; this amounts to about $2 worth of free stamps).

Here’s how it works:  Sign-in, pick an invitation style based on the type of event you are having, pick a “motif” (i.e. the invitation pattern you like), customize the invitation with your own words or those suggested for your occasion, pick a font style, specify the event details (date, time, etc.), add guests by typing in their e-mail addresses (which can be saved in an “address book” so they are there for future reference) and ”mail” the invitations by purchasing stamps from the site, which cost about 5-8¢ per stamp, depending on how many you purchase.  The invitation that’s mailed to your guests is way more exciting than an e-mail or Evite; a virtual envelope opens and reveals the invitation, much like it would if you were opening it with your own two hands.

Paperless Post is a great value, and it eliminates the process of ordering, addressing and mailing invitations.  There are, however, a few downsides to paperless invitations.  If you are sentimental or like having a nice printed invitation to save, paperless invites won’t give you the same memento.  Also, paperless invites only work if all of your guests have an e-mail address that they check regularly.  I’d say that most people do, but there’s no guarantee, especially if you have older invitees on your guest list.  For a formal events, like weddings, paper invitations are probably still your best option, but I’ll definitely be using these for the next cocktail party, holiday party or baby shower I host.

Monogram Theme Father’s Day Party June 1, 2009

monogram_beer_pitcher

If it feels like the father in your family is hard to shop for, throw a Father’s Day party with a monogram theme and tell all your guest to bring dad a monogrammed gift.  Your dad will feel super special with his initials all over.

A monogram theme also works well for a bridal shower, a birthday party or an anniversary.

Here are some other ideas to get your monogram party started:

  • Send invitations with the guest of honor’s monogram.
  • Buy a brander with the guest of honor’s initial or monogram and brand steaks and burgers before serving them.
  • Serve drinks from a monogrammed pitcher or in monogrammed glasses.
  • Buy disposable napkins with the guest of honor’s first initial imprinted on them.
  • Serve cupcakes with with the guest of honor’s initial piped on top or use alphabet shaped cookies to spell out their initials.

Some great ideas for monogrammed Father’s Day gifts include:  Pilsner, low-balls or martini glasses, beer mugs, flasks, coasters, leather catchalls (for change and keys), money clips, cuff links, key chains, cotton hankerchiefs, toiletry bags, towels, coffee mug, playing cards, polo or button-down shirts, grill tools, guitar picks, gym bags, golf towels, golf balls or golf club links.

*Monogrammed beer pitcher shown above is available at Pottery Barn for $21.50 (including cost of monogramming)

Hip Tip – Serve Chilled Soup “Up” May 24, 2009

One of my friends is from Spain and makes the best gazpacho!  She served it at a cookout last weekend in chilled martini glasses, which were the perfect serving size and a great appetizer to eat while mingling.

Make any chilled summer soup look spectacular by serving it “up” in a martini glass.  Chill the glasses in the freezer until you are ready to serve the soup for a nice frosty alternative to a bowl.
